Shark NV350 Vacuum Cleaner for Pet Hair
The most important thing we can say about the Shark – NV350 is that its power cord could be longer. On top of that, this powerful, quiet, and near-perfect upright vacuum will do a short job of not just pet hair, but dirt, dust, debris, and whatever else it might suck up.
The Shark Navigator Lift Away NV350 comes in several colors, each of which has a different serial number. We tested the Shark NV352 in lavender.
The Shark NV350 is marketed as a “lift”, which means that the canister can be detached from the main chassis to transform it into a portable vacuum cleaner. This feature allows you to vacuum anywhere within 25 feet of the power cord and enter tight areas and go up and down stairs.
The Shark NV350 cyclone separation technology and fully sealed HEPA filtration system soaks up every last bit of hair and dust. The HEPA filter also cools the exhaust air from the side vents.
The can is removed by unhooking the top and bottom latches, completely preventing debris from flying up and out when you empty it in the trash. Prior to the testing period, our tester frequently vacuumed with a Miele bagged cartridge vacuum, so was surprised to see how much more encrusted hair and dust the Shark NV350 vacuumed.
If that wasn’t revealing enough, our tester vacuumed the same areas where it tested the Eureka – NEU180B and Dirt Devil – UD70355B, and the Shark absorbed a half-full container of more hair and dust.
The Shark NV350 is lightweight (less than 13 pounds) and has excellent maneuverability thanks to its swivel steering and motorized brush. The power brush can be turned on for carpets and off for bare floors. It took a little more effort to push the Shark onto bare floors, but on the carpet, it practically buzzed across the room of its own accord.
The shark has the usual accessories: crevice tools, a couple of brushes, and also includes a pet upholstery tool, which resembles a lint brush. It’s pretty good at collecting pet hair on furniture, but you should brush it down.
Best Portable Pet Hair Grooming Device
All three handheld vacuums we tested had items specifically designed to collect pet hair. The Black + Decker HHVJ325BMP07 also did the best job of vacuuming up dust and dirt, thanks to its Smartech auto-sensing feature that automatically changes speed and power levels by detecting whether you are vacuuming carpets, bare floors, or upholstery. The auto-detect LED indicator also shows battery life and if it’s time to change the filter.
The Black + Decker is a wireless handheld vacuum cleaner and is charged with a lithium-ion battery for a minimum of six hours. For all of our tests, charging took about 18 minutes, which was almost twice the time that the Shark SV780 (the other wireless device we tested) lasted.
During the period of its load, the automatic detection changed speed when we moved from one carpet to another (higher speed), furniture (medium speed) and floor (lower speed). The load dropped a bit to about 15 minutes when we kept the vacuum running at full speed.
The Black + Decker has very strong suction that lasted for most of its load, and even as it started to taper off, it was still able to remove stubborn pet hair that clung to car carpets.
Best for Cracks and Corners: Black + Decker - HHVJ325BMP07
The Black + Decker Pet Dustbuster has a long-lasting battery charge and powerful suction. Its unique sensor automatically switches power levels from carpets to hardwood floors to upholstery.
The vacuum itself resembles a Dustbuster with an elongated nozzle that can be used to vacuum tight corners and under cabinets. One of the great features of the Black + Decker is its beater brush attachment that slides over the mouthpiece. Alternating rows of rubber brush bristles and soft rubber tabs prevent long pet hair from getting tangled and trapped when vacuuming carpeted areas and upholstery.
We were also impressed by how well the Black + Decker absorbed dust between the sofa cushions and pillows, which was revealed when we opened its canister and examined its dual filter system.
Everything is vacuumed into the container where large debris, such as dog hair or kitty litter, is separated. Dirt and dust are forced through the filter cup and trapped in the cloth filter bag that is closed inside the cup. Once the aspiration is done, the filter cup can be removed and the pet’s hair emptied into the main container without the dust flying everywhere.
Two fabric filters are included with the Black + Decker, one of which is scented and perfumes the exhaust air as you breathe in. The “fresh linen” scent is a bit overpowering, but the second filter bag is unscented. As with all handheld vacuums, they should be cleaned after each use. Cleaning is a simple task as the bowl and filters can be quickly rinsed and dried. The Black + Decker – HHVJ325BMP07 is the most expensive of the three handheld pet hair vacuums we tested, but thanks to its brush, we found that it was the only one that “activates through pet hair” as advertised. . This is a fantastic versatile handheld vacuum that you can use for any small area and upholstery.
Dirt Devil - UD70355B
The Dirt Devil UD70355B, also known as Razor Pet, is another upright cyclonic vacuum cleaner and appears to be one of the best vacuum cleaners for house business cleaning that can be made by this company. Dirt Devil markets the Razor Pet to pet owners by stamping a paw print icon on the box and canister, but is otherwise similar to the regular Dirt Devil Razor .
The only addition to the Razor Pet is its “turboclaw” accessory. It’s a mini beater brush with nine rubber teeth that are presumably designed to rake hair out of a carpet. However, for it to work properly, the claw must be held at a 45 degree angle so that the brush can reach the carpet. The vacuum has strong suction, so pet hair is lifted without the help of the useless, but cute, turboclaw.
The Razor Pet did an excellent job of constantly sucking the pet’s hair into neat spinning balls inside the canister. It has a swivel steering like the Shark NV350, and you can lower the vacuum head so it’s nearly flat (allowing it to get under furniture), but we found the steering to be stiff and not very easy to maneuver. In fact, even though the Razor Pet is lightweight, we needed a bit of elbow grease to push the vacuum.
Cyclonic separation works differently on the Razor Pet than it does on the Shark NV350. The vortex keeps the sucked hair separate and elevated, and dust and dirt are pushed up through a foam-covered cone filter. A latch at the bottom of the canister releases the hair, but the filter must be removed from the top of the canister by disengaging an unnecessarily difficult lock.
Once removed, the foam slides off the ribbed fabric filter, which traps the hair between the ridges and must be removed by hand. A fair amount of dust is trapped in the filter, but since it is not sealed, as with the Shark – NV350, the Razor Pet cannot capture pet dander. It’s a good vacuum, but it really isn’t a vacuum to handle pet hair challenges.
The Best Shark Vacuums
Eureka - NEU180B
The Eureka – NEU180B is an upright canister vacuum cleaner that is specifically marketed as a pet hair vacuum, but again, it’s really just a vacuum with a lint brush tool. It is very lightweight because it appears to be made almost entirely of plastic. An Amazon reviewer wrote that it looks like a children’s toy, and we have to agree. Even though it weighs only ten pounds, we found it difficult to push around carpeted floors, and it has no steering ability at all.
It has an extra large canister, but it’s not a cyclonic vacuum so everything explodes and spins around the bottom third of the canister. Aside from a thin piece of foam in the bowl, the Eureka doesn’t have an air filter system, so it’s clearly not designed for pet dander and dust, plus the exhaust air doesn’t smell clean.
The beater brush can supposedly be adjusted to five levels with a lever, two of which are mysteriously unlabeled, but we turned the lever at each level and nothing moved. Since the whipping brush should not be used on a hardwood floor, this is a major design flaw.
For such a noisy vacuum it doesn’t seem to have a lot of suction power. The end result of the test was that we vacuumed the same area with the other two upright vacuums, which picked up twice the amount the Eureka did.
Bissell - 33A1C
The Bissell – 33A1C is one of the highest rated handheld vacuums on Amazon. Most reviewers cite the low price, and at $ 30, it’s absolutely the least expensive handheld vacuum for pet hair. We found it to be very effective on our dog’s bed; He grabbed every last hair. However, her gum-toothed mouth doesn’t really rake hair, and we had to go to bed several times before all the hair was pulled back.
It’s corded, so you’re limited in where you can vacuum. We found the vacuum to be especially challenging when it comes to cleaning the car as you need a nearby outlet that can accommodate your cord.
The vent exhaust is close to the head, so for anything other than hair, the exhaust air blows it out. Bissell’s tapered mouth allows you to vacuum in tight spaces, but the gaps in the rubber mouth are so small that it can’t really pick up much other than pet hair.
Finally, cleaning the filter is a pain, especially if you have a pet with long hair. The pet hair eraser has a ribbed fabric filter that catches long pet hair and can only be removed by pulling it out with your fingers.
Clearly, there is a lot of competition in marketing a vacuum cleaner to pet owners, and at first, it can be daunting to decide what type of vacuum you need and then whether it can actually do what is advertised. You could certainly spend a month’s rent on a very high-end vacuum, but we focused our research and further testing on reasonably priced handheld and upright vacuums that were specifically designed for vacuuming pet hair.
The best bagless upright vacuum for pet hair was hands down the Shark – NV350 . Its rotating steering and motorized brush give this lightweight vacuum cleaner excellent maneuverability, so it can get under furniture and into tight corners. The Shark – NV350 has a dual air filtration system with a HEPA filter, which removes virtually all specks of dust and dander on your carpets and floors. It also has a removable canister to transform it into a portable vacuum cleaner that is perfect for going up and down stairs.
Our pick for the best handheld pet hair vacuum is Black + Decker – HHVJ325BMP07 . It’s a wireless handheld and it takes 18 minutes to charge, giving you plenty of time for quick cleaning of small areas. The Black + Decker’s automatic sensor changes power levels automatically when moving from carpet to bare floors to upholstery. It’s more expensive than other handheld vacuums, but it really does the job that others didn’t do in our tests.
Best Overall for Pet Hair: Shark - NV350
This upright cyclone vac sucks every last bit of pet hair, dust, dirt, and dander from carpets, hardwood floors, and upholstery. It has excellent maneuverability and steering, and the liftable canister transforms it into a portable vacuum that is perfect for stairs.
